Are underwire bras bad for you?
No. There is no medical evidence that underwire bras cause breast cancer, cysts, or any other health problem. The discomfort some women experience is almost always a size issue — the wire is sitting on breast tissue instead of enclosing it. When the cup size and band are correct, underwire should feel supportive, not painful. If yours pokes, digs, or leaves marks, you need a different size, not a different bra type.
How should an underwire bra fit?
The wire should fully enclose your breast without sitting on any breast tissue. The centre gore — the piece between the cups — should lie flat against your sternum. The wire should follow the natural crease where your breast meets your ribcage. If the wire rides up onto your breast, your cup is too small. If it gaps at the bottom, your cup is too large.
Can I sleep in an underwire bra?
